Week of September 18, 2016

Called…

This week we will be looking at the call of the first disciples as told by the four Gospels.

Monday: Jesus is revealed through an unexpected catch and invites his first disciples to join him in his mission.

Read Ephesians Luke 5:1-11

Questions for Reflection and Application

1. Have you ever responded to Jesus like Peter did in verse 8?  When?

2. What effect did it have on you?  If not, what do you think of Peter’s response?

3. Read verse 10b again. Are there fears that are keeping you from following Jesus more closely.

Prayer Focus

Pray that your love for Jesus would overwhelm any fear you may have to follow him more closely today.

Tuesday: The first disciples respond to Jesus “immediately.”

Read Mark 1:16-20

Questions for Reflection and Application

1. Why do you think the first disciples responded to Jesus without hesitation?

2. What did they see in him?  What do you see in Jesus?  Does it cause you to hesitate or follow him without reserve?  If you have reservation, could it be that you are not seeing what they saw?

Prayer Focus

Pray to see Jesus more clearly so that you might respond to him today without delay.

Wednesday: Jesus calls two sets of brothers as they are about their daily work.

Read Matthew 4:18-22

Questions for Reflection and Application

1. Where are you in this story?  Tending the nets?  Leaving the boat?  Following Jesus?  Left behind?

2. Who are your companion disciples?  In other words, you are not called alone, but your calling is linked with others.

Prayer Focus

Pray that you might hear Christ’s call today as you go about your regular activities (as the disciples were going about their daily fishing work).

Thursday: The Gospel of John tells a very different story of the calling of the first disciples. Notice the roll of Andrew and Philip in bringing others to Jesus.

Read John 1:35-42

Questions for Reflection and Application

1. Who has helped you come to Jesus?

2. Who are you helping find Jesus?

Prayer Focus

Pray for the opportunity to help someone find Jesus today.

Friday:  Another one of the early disciples to follow Jesus was Matthew.  Read about his calling today.

Read Matthew 9:9-13

Questions for Reflection and Application

1. Jesus met Matthew at work?  How has Jesus met you while you were doing your daily work?

2. Do you ever have problems with certain people that Jesus calls to follow him (e.g. tax collectors = sinners)?  How can you accept more those whom Jesus has called.

Prayer Focus

Pray for an openness to the variety of people Jesus calls to follow him, even though some may surprise you.
