Week of October 9, 2016

Called…The call of Adam is a call to us all to care for God’s creation.

Monday: God formed man, trees and every bird of the air and animal of the tree from the ground. We are all of the earth and related.  God puts Adam in the garden and calls him to take care of it. The call to human beings to care for the earth is rooted in our Creation and first calling.

Read Genesis 2:4b-9, 15-20

Questions for Reflection and Application

1. How do you understand your responsibility to care for creation?

2. How are you doing with this call?  Is there anything you might improve?

Prayer Focus

Pray for the sustainability of God’s good creation.

Tuesday: As a result of being created in the image of God, human beings are given responsibility (i.e. stewardship/dominion) over the rest of creation.

Read Genesis 1:26-31

Questions for Reflection and Application

1.Do you draw your self-esteem from the knowledge that you are created in the image of God?  If not, how might that understanding resolve any self-esteem issues you may have? If so, how is that knowledge shaping the way you are a co-creator with God?

Prayer Focus

Pray for a grounding of your self-esteem in the knowledge of how you were created.  In other words, pray for a healthy self-image.

Wednesday: Psalms 8 celebrates our awesome responsibility to care for the earth and its creatures, while at the same time acknowledging what humble creatures we are ourselves.

Read Psalm 8

Questions for Reflection and Application

1. How can verses 3-4 be a good corrective to your perspective if you think too highly of yourself?

2. How can verses 5-8 be a good corrective to your perspective if you think too low of yourself?

3. Which are you tempted to most of often?  How can you find a better balance?

Prayer Focus

Pray for a greater sense of humility and worthiness.

Thursday: God makes a covenant with not only Noah, but with “every living creature.”  Our covenant with God is related to God’s covenant with creation, thus demonstrating again our deep affinity and responsibility for “every living creature.”

Read Genesis 9:8-17

Questions for Reflection and Application

1. Do you perceive the deep affinity you have with other living creatures?

2. How might you express that affinity?

Prayer Focus

Identify one of God’s “living creatures.”  Pray for ways to express God’s concern and care for them.

Friday:  No part of creation belongs to itself, including human beings.  All belong to God.

Read Psalm 24:1-2

2. How can you live consistent with the difference it makes?
