Week of August 28, 2016

Growing with the Prophets:  Jeremiah

This week we will be looking at some of the best known passages from the book of Jeremiah.  We begin, however with Sunday’s text.

Monday: God is unwaveringly faithful despite the people’s rebellion.

Read Jeremiah 2:4-13

Questions for Reflection and Application

1. What “cracked cisterns”  are you tempted to drink from?

2. How can you drink from the “fountain of living water” today?

Prayer Focus

Pray that you might turn from cracked cisterns to living water – i.e. pray that you might not substitute anything or anyone for God today.

Tuesday: The allegory of the potter

Read Jeremiah 18:1-12

Questions for Reflection and Application

1. Are you willing to be shaped by God today – i.e. to be clay in your Potter’s hands?  Why or why not?

2. How might God want to shape you today?

Prayer Focus

Pray that God might use all of your experiences today to shape and mold you to be more like Christ.

Wednesday: The new covenant will be written on people’s hearts.

Read Jeremiah 31:31-34

Questions for Reflection and Application

1. Look deep within your heart.  What has God written there concerning who you are and who you are called to be?

2. Have you internalized the Gospel?  Is it written in your heart?  If so, how can you continue to integrate the Good News with the rest of your life?  If not, what might you do to move it from your head to your heart?

Prayer Focus

Give thanks to God for forgiving your iniquity and remembering your sin no more.

Thursday: Jeremiah buys a field at “ground zero.”  Judah will have a future!

Read Jeremiah 32:6-15

Questions for Reflection and Application

1. What can you do today that will invest in God’s future (symbolically - what field are you called to buy)?

2. What do you see as you look through the lens of the prophetic hope witnessed to in this passage?

Prayer Focus

In hope, pray for God’s future.

Friday: Jeremiah sinks in the mud at the bottom of a cistern.

Read Jeremiah 38:1-6

Questions for Reflection and Application

1. What has been your spiritual low point?  Where did you receive help?

2. What difficulties do you face trying to be faithful to God?  What

resources is God providing you to endure?

 Prayer Focus

Pray for those who are being persecuted for their faith
