Monday: Often when we think of spiritual calling in the Bible, we look to the better-known individual characters, such as that of Adam, Samuel, and Jacob, who respond to God in profound ways. But each of these people exists in community with others, who are also a part of the call story.

Read 1 Samuel 1: 1-11

Questions for Reflection and Application

1. Why is it that Hannah longs for a son?

2. How does Hannah’s prayer at the Temple express a deep understanding of stewardship?

Prayer Focus

God of Hannah, teach us how to give all we have and all we long for to your service.

Tuesday:   Trust in the LORD

Read 1 Samuel 1: 12 - 28

Questions for Reflection and Application

1. What do Hannah’s (and Elkanah’s) actions reveal about her trust in the LORD?

2. Has there ever been a time in your life when you have handed over something precious to God?

Prayer Focus

God of Elkanah, teach us to trust that everything rests in your hands.

Wednesday: Prayer of a prophet

Read 1 Samuel 2: 1-10, 18-21

Questions for Reflection and Application

1. This scripture passage is the framework for Mary’s Magnificat

(Luke 1: 46). What do Hannah and Mary’s stories have in common?

2. How is gratitude a part of stewardship? Are you grateful for what you return to God’s service?

God of Mary, help us to rejoice and give thanks in giving to you.

Thursday:  A calling in the night

Read 1 Samuel 3: 1-10

Questions for Reflection and Application

1. What does Samuel’s initial response to the LORD’s calling say about his sense of duty?

2. Is there ever a time when duty to others has interfered with your ability to respond to God’s calling? Do you know what it sounds like when God calls you?

God of Samuel, help us to hear you, and respond.

Friday:  It is the LORD.

Read 1 Samuel 3: 11-19

Questions for Reflection and Application

1. How does Eli respect the word of the LORD through is actions?

2. Have you ever heard God saying something to you that you would rather not hear? How did you respond?

God of Eli, help us to trust you, even when you speak in ways that are difficult for us to hear.
